L'église

La toute première église, un édifice de bois, fut inaugurée en 1854. Un siècle plus tard, en 1954, la communauté vota de déménager à son emplacement actuel sur un terrain de 10 acres. Toujours considérée comme étant un chef de file dans la communauté, l'église First Presbyterian a poussé plus loin son implication historique avec une toute nouvelle structure qui, avec sa façade moderne et son carillon, lui a valu un statut de monument.

Conçu par Wallace K. Harrison, le nouvel édifice fut inauguré en mars 1958. Sa forme est liée à celle d'un poisson - un sysbole utilisé depuis toujours dans la chrétienté. La forme de poisson est visible tant au niveau du profil de la structure que la disposition du plancher. La forme unique de l'édifice est rehaussée par la présence des verrières qui contiennent plus de 20,000 pièces de verre et qui représentent l'histoire de la crucifixion et celle de la résurrection. La croix, haute de 9,7 mètres (32 pieds), qui domine le choeur, est faite de bois provenant de la cathédrale de Canterbury, en Angleterre.

Le mur de pierre longeant la rue Bedford contient une série de plaques commémoratives rappelant les évènements, les institutions et les individus qui ont fait l'histoire de Stamford, particulièrement ceux reliés au monde religieux, de 1841 à 1975. L'allée menant de la salle Fellowship à l'entrée principale de l'église comprend plus de 100 statues représentant les géants spirituels de la tradition judéo-chrétienne allant d'Abraham à nos jours. Elles ont été amassées personnellement par un ancien pasteur, le Dr. George Stewart.

The Church

The very first church, a wooden structure, was dedicated in 1854. One hundred years later, in 1954, the congregation voted to relocate to the present location on 10 acres of land. Always considered a leader in the community, the First Presbyterian Church furthered its historical distinction when the new structure, with its modern facade and towering Carillon, earned the Church landmark status.

Designed by Wallace K. Harrison, the new sanctuary was dedicated in March 1958. Its shape has been likened to that of a fish - a symbol used in early Christianity. The fish shape is apparent both in the profile and in the floor plan of the structure. Enhancing the unique shape of the church are the outstanding stained glass windows in the sanctuary, containing more than 20,000 pieces of faceted glass and depicting the story of the Crucifixion and of the resurrection; and the 32 foot (9.7 meter) high cross faced with wood from the Canterbury Cathedral in England, which dominates the Chancel.

The stone wall along Bedford Street contains a series of tablets which recognize significant events, institutions and individuals in the history of Stamford, particularly those with a religious inpact, from 1641-1975. The Memorial Walk leading from Fellowship Hall to the main entrance of the Sanctuary has more than 100 stones, each representing one of the spiritual giants of the Judeo-Christian tradition from the days of Abraham to the present. They were personally gathered by former pastor Dr. George Stewart.
