L'orgue

Dans cette petite église à trois nefs, construite entre 1874 et 1894 dans un style néogothique et remplaçant une ancienne petite chapelle, se situant au delà des Boulevards ceinturant Bordeaux, on note, dès 1863, la présence d'un organiste et de frais d'accord d'instrument dans l'ancienne chapelle. On ignore le nom du facteur et la composition de l'orgue.

En 1895, Gaston Maille construit un petit instrument de 6 jeux dans la tribune de la nouvelle église.

En 1964, Kurt Schwenkedel construit, dans la tribune, un instrument de 13 jeux sur 2 claviers et pédalier à transmissions électriques.

En 1979, la maison Pesce de Pau construit, dans le choeur, un instrument de 29 jeux sur 3 claviers et pédalier, d'esthétique allemande en réutilisant la tuyauterie de l'ancien instrument.

En 1991, des facteurs palois Michel et Gilbert Pesce reconstruisent l'instrument. Sa construction durera trois ans. Son buffet est de sapin et tulipier massif (hauteur: 7,6m) décoré avec des imitations de marbres. 61 tuyaux en étain composent la façade sur 3 étages.

Bien que s’inspirant, pour partir, d’instruments anciens tels qu’on les trouve en Allemagne du Nord au 17e et au début du 18e siècle (l’ensemble des jeux est construit à partir des relevés effectués sur des instruments historiques d’Allemagne du nord), l’orgue de Saint-Augustin n’est pas pour autant une copie servile. Si sa vocation première est de servir au mieux la littérature des grands maîtres de la Hanse, d’autres œuvres postérieures - et notamment celles de Johann Sebastian Bach - y sonnent avec le plus grand bonheur, car la première place a été accordée à l’esprit de synthèse et de liberté.

The organ

In this small three-nave church, built between 1874 and 1894 in a neoGothic style in replacement of a old small chapel, is located beyond the Boulevards surrounding Bordeaux, the presence of an organist and tuning charges aare recorded ever since 1863 but the organbuilder's name and the stop list of the instrument are unknown.

In 1895, Gaston Maille built a small 6-stop instrument to be located in the gallery in the new church.

In 1964, Kurt Schwenkedel built, again in the gallery, a 13-stop 2-manual and pedal electric-action instrument.

Reusing existing pipework, organbuilding firm Pesce, from Pau, built in 1979, in the chancel, a 29-stop 3-manual and pedal instrument of German aesthetics.

In 1991, the same organbuilding firm Pesce rebuilt the instrument. The construction will last three years. The organ case is made of fit and large tulip trees (height: 7.6m) decorated with imitation marble. The 3-story façade is made up of 61 tin pipes.

Even though partially inspired by ancient instruments such as were to be found in northern Germany in the 17th and early-18th centuries (the ensemble of stops was based on notes made from historic instruments in northern Germany), the organ at St. Augustin is not a slavish copy. Its principal vocation is to serve the literature of the great masters of the Hansetic League as faithfully as possible. Other later works - and in particular those of Johann Sebastian Bach - ring out with the greatest ease, for the main consideration was spirit of synthesis and freedom.
