L'église

L'église, contruite au XVe siècle, enjambe la route par un étonnant porche jouxtant le clocher. Cette église fut, pendant quelques années, une cathédrale grâce à une bulle d'un Jean XXIII qui n'est pas le bon. Il abrite de beaux vitraux datant du XVe siècle et un Chemin de croix signé Louis Boulanger, un ami de Victor Hugo.

Le pittoresque cocher à tourelles pouvait servir de réduit de défense. Il est ajouré de baies gothiques dont la fenestrage s'enrichit d'étages en étages.

L'orgue

Cet orgue doit son existence à l'abbé Bartherote, curé de Mirande, homme cultivé. Il entreprendra, en 1860, d'importants travaux dans l'église dont la construction d'un grand orgue qui sera achevé en 1866.

L'orgue a été construit par Jules Magen et son fils, Victor. Jules Magen, un romantique, avait été contremaître chez Cavaillé-Coll avant de fonder sa propre maison à Agen. Néanmoins, la tradition classique colore son travail. Il nous propose une palette sonore à l'équilibre raffiné.

L'archaïsme de la console peut induire l'organiste à se perdre dans des conjectures, quant au choix du répertoire. La beauté unique de cet orgue se révèle peu à peu sous les doigts qui se laissent guider. On découvre. On oublie les risques.

L'orgue a été restauré, en 1990, par Bernard Raupp, facteur d'orgues à Mirande.

The church

The church, built in the 15th century, steps over the street with a amazing porch adjacent to the bell tower. It was used as a cathedral for a few years thanks to a bull signed by a Pope John XXIII, an usurper. The church houses magnificent 15th-century stained glass windows and a Way of the cross made by Louis Boulanger, a friend of Victor Hugo.

The picturesque turret bell tower could be used as a defence reduit. It is decorated with Gothic openwork whose fenestration gets richer from floor to floor.

The organ

This organ exists thanks to Rev. Bartherote, the parish priest and a well-educated person. He set about, in 1860, to carry out major works in the church includinig the building of a large organ that would be finished in 1866.

The organ was built by Jules Magen and his son, Victor. Jules Magen, a romantic, was a foreman in Cavaillé-Coll's workshop before setting up his own shop in Agen. Nevertheless, his instruments are built in the classical tradition. This instrument presents a tonal structure with an exquisite balance.

The archaism of the console could mislead the organist to be perplexed concerning the literature to be executed on this instrument. The unique beauty of this organ comes to light when one gets playing it. There are nice discoveries and risks are forgotten.

The organ was restored, in 1990, by Bernard Raupp, organbuilder from Mirande.
