Eusèbe Brodeur, 1898

La première chapelle aux Cèdres fut construite en 1728; elle servit jusqu'à la construction de la première église en 1781. En 1786, M. le colonel de Longueuil donna à la paroisse le terrain où l'église était déjà située. Malheureusement, la paroisse rencontra de nombreuses difficultés financières: à un moment, on envisagea de vendre le terrain, mais on comprit que l'éventuel bénéfice de la vente devrait être versé aux héritiers du colonel, et la paroisse n'aurait rien. Le plan fut abandonné et l'actuelle église de pierre fut commencée en 1879 et fut inaugurée en 1881. On pense que les vitraux sont d'occasion, venus peut-être d'une église protestante; le clocher fut doté de trois cloches achetées à Londres, Angleterre. Le 14 janvier 1950, un orage violent abattit le clocher qui enfonça le toit de l'église: il fut rebâti mais un peu moins haut.
L'orgue
L3 3 juillet 1898, une assemblée des marguilliers décide d'acher un orgue de Eusèbe Brodeur pour un montant de 2 000$. Avant l'installation de l'instrument actuel, l'église utilisait un vieil harmonium qui a été vendu pour la somme de 15$. Il suscita une grande curiosité: des enfants - et même une femme - rivalisèrent pour le poste de souffleur, aux gages de 10 cents l'heure.
Depuis son installation, l'instrument remplit fidèlement sa fonction jusqu'à ce que, par manque d'entretien, il devint inutilisable. En 1975, la paroisse confia à la maison Guilbault-Thérien (alors sous la raison sociale "Orgues Providence") la tâche de le restaurer.
Le facteur dut alors régler des problèmes d'approvisionnement en vent et de réparation de la mécanique. Il lui fallut aussi restituer la partie aigüe de la tuyauterie du Prestant, de la Doublette et même à peu près toute celle de la Mixture, les tuyaux ayant disparu ou étant devenus irrémédiablement déformés. Ces travaux ont redonné aux paroissiens un bien bel orgue qui est classé depuis 1977.
The first chapel in Les Cèdres was built in 1728; it served until it was replaced with the first church building in 1781. In 1786, Colonel de Longueuil gave the parish the land on which the church was already situated. Unfortunately, the parish faced repeated financial difficulties, and at one time, actually gave serious consideration to selling the land, until it became clear that any money realized from the sale would be required to be given to the Colonel's heirs, leaving the parish with nothing. That plan came to naught, and the present stone church, started in 1879, was opened in 1881. It is believed that the stained glass windows came second-hand, perhaps from a Protestant church; the bell tower was fitted with three bells purchased in London, England. A powerful storm on January 14, 1950 threw down the spire and sent it crashing through the roof of the church; it was subsequently rebuilt in a somewhat shorter version.
The organ
On July 3, 1898, the Chrchwardens approved the purchase of an organ from Eusèbe Brodeur for an mount of $2,000. Until its installation in 1898, the church housed an old reed organ which was sold for $15. Its installation caused quite a stir; youngsters - and even one woman - vied for the opportunity to make ten cents an hour pumping it.
Since its installation, the instrument duly performed until, due to lack of maintenance, it became unusable. In 1975, the parish commissionned Guilbault-Thérien (doing business at the time as "Orgues Providence") to restore it.
The organ builder had to solve a wind supply problem and to repair the mechanics. He also had to rebuild the upper section of the Prestant, of the Doublette and almost all the pipes of the Mixture; the pipes have disappeared or were irreparably out of shape.
These works brought back a very fine instrument which is classified as an historical instrument since 1977.
