L'existence de la communauté luthérienne St. John's remonte à 1853 alors qu'un petit groupe d'immigrants de langue allemande étudie la possibilité d'établir leur propre église. Au début, les célébrations religieuses se tiennent dans des locaux loués à l'église Trinity Church et ensuite à l'église Christ Church. Le 31 octobre 1858, la communauté inaugure sa première église sise au coin des rues St-Dominique et Charlotte Lane à l'arrière de l'emplacement actuel du Marché St-Laurent. Le présent édifice, complété en 1907, est situé au coin des rues Jeanne Mance et Prince Arthur.
L'orgue
Le premier orgue a été acheté en 1859 pour la somme de 350 $. Il a été déménagé de l'ancienne église de la rue St-Dominique dans le présent édifice où il fut aménagé dans une chambre du côté gauche de l'autel. Il a été inauguré le 27 avril 1908. L'organiste Lynwood Farnam visita l'église en 1909 et eut le commentaire suivant concernant l'orgue: "... très belle sonorité, excepté pour la trompette".
En 1913, un nouvel instrument à traction pneumatique-tubulaire est acheté du facteur Karn-Warren de Woodstock, en Ontario. Le coût de cet instrument à deux claviers et de sept jeux a été de 1 950 $. Une somme additionnelle de 600$ a été déboursée afin de construire un nouveau jubé à l'arrière de l'église pour y loger l'orgue.
En 1983, Hellmuth Wolff remplace cet instrument avec un nouvel orgue à traction mécanique placé dans un buffet auto-portant de chêne blanc. Seuls les tuyaux de bois de l'ancien instrument ont été ré-utilisés.
Le système de traction des claviers et des jeux est entièrement mécanique. Les claviers manuels sont de padouk et de grenadille alors que les notes accidentées sont recouvertes d'os. Le pédalier plat est fait de chêne avec des notes accidentées en bois de rose. Les claires-voies sont de butternut (noyer) alors que les tirants de jeux sont de bois de rose. Une caractéristique intéressante de cet instrument est l'installation de la tuyauterie de la pédale dans un buffet séparé placé à l'arrière du buffet principal.
Le concert inaugural fut donné par Douglas Bodle le 20 mars 1983.

St. John's Lutheran Church dates to 1853 when a small group of German-Speaking immigrants began discussing to possibility of forming a church. Initially, services were held in rented premises at Trinity Church and then Christ Church. On October 31, 1858, the congregation held its first service in their own building, situated at the corner of St. Dominique Street and Charlotte Lane, at the rear of today's St. Lawrence Market. In 1907, the present church was completed at the corner of Jeanne Mance and Prince Arthur Streets.
The Organ
The first organ was bought in 1859 for $350. It was moved from the St. Dominique Street church to the present building and erected in the chamber to the left of the altar. Its dedication took place on April 27, 1908. Lynnwood Farnam visited the church in 1909 and commented that it has "... very nive tone, except the trumpet".
In 1913, the church purchased a new tubular-pneumatic instrument from the Karn-Warren Piano and Organ Co. Ltd. of Woodstock, Ontario. The cost of this two-manual 7-stop instrument was $1,950. An additional $600 was spent for the construction of a new gallery to house the organ at the back of the church.
In 1983, Hellmuth Wolff replaced that instrument with a new two-manual organ in a free standing case of solid white oak. Only the wooden pipes were reused from the 1913 organ.
The stop and key action (balanced) is entirely mechanical. The keyboards are of padouk and grenadilla, the sharps being capped with bone. The flat pedalboard is of oak with rosewood sharps. The pipe shades are of butternut and the stop knobs are rosewood. An interesting feature of the organ is the separate pedal case located behind the instrument.
The inaugural recital was played on March 20, 1983 by Douglas Bodle.
